Getting Atheros drivers working in OpenSUSE
0 comments
As many OpenSUSE users who have tried to get WPA/WPA2 working with Atheros wireless cards know, the built-in drivers (ath5k) for OpenSUSE leave a lot to be desired. I personally couldn't get them to authenticate to my wireless network at all. Clicking on the network manager applet would show my SSID, but when I clicked on it and entered my password it would continue to ask me again for my password (meaning that it didn't work, I think) a few more times, and then tell me that it couldn't connect. If this is happening to you, here's how to replace the built-in drivers with madwifi drivers, which work perfectly with WPA/WPA2:
Open up a terminal and type
sudo zypper -v sa http://madwifi.org/suse/`python -c "import platform;print platform.dist()[1]"` madwifiThis will install the madwifi drivers. Start them using
sudo zypper install madwifi madwifi-kmp-`uname -r | awk -F- '{print $3}'`
sudo modprobe ath_pciUnfortunately, you still will not be able to authenticate yet because OpenSUSE is still using the ath5k drivers. We need to tell it not to:
sudo echo blacklist ath5k >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklistNow reboot, and you should be able to use the network manager applet to connect to your network using WPA/WPA2.
